What
is it? The luffa, loofah, or lufah (from Arabic ليفة) are tropical and subtropical vines comprising the genus Luffa, the only genus of
the subtribeLuffinae of the
plant family Cucurbitaceae. The fruit
of at least two species, Luffa
acutangula and Luffa aegyptiaca (Luffa
cylindrica), is grown, harvested before maturity, and eaten as a vegetable,
popular in Asia and Africa.
The
ripe, dried fruit is also the source of the loofah or plant sponge. Luffas are
also used to make the soles of beach sandals.
Exfoliation!
Most
everyone has at one point or another seen the straw colored sponge at a spa or
in someone’s bathroom. The loofah sponge is a great way to exfoliate the skin
(help shed dead skin cells). When you gently rub the exterior of the skin (upper
epidermis) with the loofah it will remove dead skin cells and reveal a new layer
of skin. This process leaves your skin fresh, clean and tight. Often people will
use a loofah sponge with a detachable handle to clean your back or even to
function as a back scratcher!
Cleaning
Loofah: It is important that you keep your loofah clean and
ventilated so that it will dry and not create mold. Soak the loofah periodically
to keep it clean and free of mold. Mix 1 tbsp. baking soda and 1 tbsp. white
vinegar per cup of water and add to a bowl with the loofah. After an hour, rinse
the loofah thoroughly and dry as usual.
Other
uses: cut it down to use for scrubbing pots and pans, use in crafting to make
anything from Christmas decorations, placemats, jewelry,
coasters,etc.
